TetrisⓇ: A Puzzle Game

Is Tetris a puzzle? This is one of the commonly searched questions about Tetris that we just had to answer.

A puzzle is defined as “a game, toy, or problem designed to test ingenuity or knowledge.”

The puzzle genre is vast, including jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, word-search puzzles, and yes, Tetris

The Tetris game was inspired by the classic puzzle game Pentominos, which consists of all the different shapes that can be combined using five squares (for a total of 12). They must be arranged in a wooden box—kind of like a jigsaw puzzle.

Alexey Pajitnov, the brains behind the Tetris origin, knocked the number of squares down to four, thus minimizing the total number of shapes to seven. Created in 1984, the game was an instant hit among programmers.

Tetris shapes, called Tetriminos, are the seven distinctive geometric blocks that are a core part of the game. Tetris gameplay involves Tetriminos falling down the Matrix (i.e., playing field), and the object of the game is to score as many points as possible by clearing lines of horizontal blocks.

Much like with a jigsaw, Tetris players can choose between single or multiplayer modes, making it an ideal game for anyone who wants to play solo or with others.
